The village below the ridge

Grindelwald in October is a different place. The summer crowds are gone, the ski season hasn't started. The village belongs to itself again.

The light in early October sits lower and warmer. Shadows come earlier. The air has that specific quality: cold but not sharp, clear in a way that feels like the sky has been cleaned overnight.

We walked out past the last houses and up toward the First ridge. The trail was empty. The only sounds were our footsteps and the wind working through the grass.

There's a version of a famous place that exists before and after fame. This was that version. The Eiger was still there, massive and indifferent, but without anyone else pointing at it, it felt like something we'd discovered ourselves.

Some places are worth returning to when they're quiet. Grindelwald in October is one of them.
