Lena grew up in Engelberg. Not the Engelberg of lift queues and group photos, but the one that exists before and after the season, the version most people never see.
In summer she paraglides. Not for the views, she says, but for the silence on the way down. In winter she works at the lift. Six days a week, 6am, before anyone else arrives.
We met her on a Tuesday in October. The cable cars were still running but the village felt like it had exhaled. We walked the lower trail and she pointed out the places she returns to: a flat rock above the treeline, a stream that only flows in spring, a wooden bench someone built and no one claims.
She doesn't talk much about the mountains as a place to achieve things. She talks about them as a place to be quiet. That's the only version that makes sense to her.
